I strongly recommend that you read my other stories before reading this, especially the four other stories in the ‘Sightings’ series: Angels of the Night, Terror in the Sky, Defenders of the Night and Visitors From the Sky. Sightings: Legends of Stone “Lennox MacDuff is perhaps the world’s *only* authority on gargoyles. Years of research, observation and interaction with this remarkable community has allowed him to see a side of gargoyles that the rest of the world isn’t privy to. Today, he has agreed to join us.” Danielle Wagner turned to the man seated beside her with a welcoming smile. “Welcome to ‘The Dani Show,’ Mr. MacDuff.” “‘Tis a pleasure to be here, lass.” Lennox MacDuff leaned back in his chair. “When I heard of this special program ye had planned, I thought ‘twould be a good idea for me to be here.” “And we’re glad you thought so. Mr. MacDuff, how did you come to study gargoyles for a living?” “‘Tis nae a career, lass,” MacDuff objected. “More of a hobby, truth be told. And how I got into it.. well, that’s quite a long story and t’would take far longer than we have to tell it. Let’s just say that some old friends encouraged my interest.” “As you know,” Dani said, “the entire point of this episode was to get a debate going, to examine both sides of the so-called ‘garogyle menace.’ So far we’ve seen some very differing views. What do you think of the gargoyles, Mr. MacDuff?” “I must admit, lass, there was a time when they were nae my favorite people. I was rather hostile toward their people as a whole, I’m afraid. But over time, I’ve come to see that they’re just people. People with wings, aye. But people nonetheless.” “That seems to be a common thread for many of our guests today,” Dani noted. “Tell me, the rumors of gargyle attacks and destruction; is there any truth to them?” “I cannae say. I’m sure that there have been some incidents in which gargoyles were involved. But the charges of violence and reckless destruction - that is grossly exaggerrated, some of it surely fabricated. Gargoyles are very honorable and highly moral. They don’t believe in attacking an unarmed opponent, combat must be honorable and tghey would never endanger innocent standers-by. So ye see, by their own moral code, they could nae have done 99% of what they’ve been accused of.” Dani smiled wryly. “Mr. MacDuff, quite a few people would point out that the gargoyles ‘moral code’ is exactly why they’re guilty of what they’ve been accused of.” “I should like to think ye’re smarter than that, Danielle. People should listen to the truth, not rumors.” “I’d like to think so too, Mr. MacDuff.” Dani turned to thecameras and smiled. “Unfortunately it seems we’re out of time. I’d like to thank all our guests for joining us today. You too, Mr. MacDuff,” she added warmly. “I hope you’ve all been given something to think about today. And I hope you’ll all join us next time as we speak with former Congressman Derek Allen.” The executive producer signalled that the cameras were off and Dani rolled her eyes with a sigh of relief. ‘Thank God *that’s* over with.’ Rand and Yale had been nice enough, but the McDonald man had spent every second of time since his appearance baiting and badgering the two reps from the People for Interspecies Tolerance. During commercial breaks Dani had been forced to play mediator. ‘They don't pay me enough...’ But it hadn’t been as horrible an idea as she’d thought it would be. The guests had been interesting and the audience hadn’t lynched the PIT people like she’d feared. And she’d certainly learned a lot. So it hadn’t been a total waste of a show. ‘Maybe,’ Dani thought absently, ‘I can catch those PIT people before they leave.” ________ End
