Nothing too important here. ________ Terms of Survival Epilogue Bobbie had left a window open and the sounds of the jungle drifted through to fill the room with the chirping of insects, the cries of the chimps and, in the distance, the call of a jungle act. Despite the cover of darkness, it seemed as if the entire jungle was wide awake and active. Duke l'Orange stared out at the ceiling, exhausted, yet unable to sleep. The small room he lay in was off the back of the clinic where Bobbie worked, and it was stifling with heat and humidity, the only relief the slight breeze coming through the window. Duke longed to get up and turn on the fan he saw across the room, unfortunately, as the current condition of his leg precluded any sort of activity that even resembled walking, he'd have to lie there and suffer. He supposed he could call out and get someone else to turn it on, but he really didn't want to wake anyone up. Well, he *did,* but he wasn't going to. Doctor Carter had done enough for them in the last couple of days, she deserved a little rest. Duke shifted as much as he could without moving his leg or his arm - in other words, not much, trying to find a cool bit of sheets. There was none and he admitted defeat. 'I never thought I'd miss Anaheim's weather,' Duke thought wearily. At the moment, even the usually overpowering heat of Anaheim seemed like a pleasant alternative. A sound come from the next bed and Duke turned to glance at the other patient. He waited for a moment, listening carefully, but there was no further sound. Nosedive had been out of it almost for the entire time since they left Isla Nublar. He'd awoken only once since - on the Aerowing as they were heading toward Bahia Anasco. Duke himself had regained consciousness shortly after take-off and he had kept silent vigil with Wildwing as the team captain had carefully cradled his brother, sheltering him from the movement of the Aerowing, saying nothing and helping Tanya try to stem the bleeding. At the time, the possibility that Dive wouldn't make it had seemed so real, and Wildwing's eyes had belied Tanya's reassurances that the boy would be all right. For a time it had been far, far too close. Then, only a few minutes from the clinic, Dive had woken. With a shuddering gasp and a pained cry his eyes had flown open. He had been obviously panicked - Duke knew from experience. His own return to consciousness had been similar - and for an instant he hadn't been registering his surroundings. Then Wildwing's soft words and murmured reassurance had breached the veil of pain and fear and Dive had relaxed, slumping into Wing's hold. He had remained awake as they landed, and as Dr. Carter and Dr. Huggarman rushed to meet them, but being lifted to the gurney the doctors had waiting had been too much, and he'd blacked out again. He hadn't awoken since. It had been almost two days. The others had left, to return to Isla Nublar and help with the clean-up. Wildwing had left only when Duke assured him that Dive would never leave his sight, and that one of the doctors would remain with them at all times. In the end, only the knowledge that his brother was out of danger, and that the people back on Isla Nublar desperately needed all the help they could get had allowed Wildwing to leave at all. Still, Duke knew that the other Ducks would be leaving as soon as their consciences would allow. When he came back he'd have plenty of time to fuss and worry - and Dive would probably welcome every second of it. But for now... For now it was all but over. The phones on Isla Nublar were working again and Tanya kept Duke up to date on their progress. She was leaving a lot out - Duke was a master at discerning when people weren't telling him the truth, and Tanya had always been a horrible liar. But they were all in one piece, and they'd be back by morning. Tanya had mentioned the Costa Rican army right before she told him that they'd be leaving the island immediately. Duke got the impression the government hadn't been fully apprised of what was going on down at the island, and weren't too happy with what they'd found out. Duke dropped his head back against the pillow. He was tired, and even the heat wouldn't keep him awake for much longer. Right now everything was okay, everyone was safe. They'd be in over their heads again soon enough. He'd better get his rest and relaxation while he could. End
